Fresh crisis rocks LP as spokesman seeks Obi’s new campaign DG’s immediate exit

By our reporter

Barely two weeks after crisis rocked the Labour Party over financial issues, another crisis looms in the party as its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Abayomi Arabambi, today questioned yesterday’s appointment of Professor Akin Osuntokun as Director General (DG) of the Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Organization.

He called on Osuntokun to quit the position, which was made vacant following the resignation of the former holder, Dr. Doyin Okupe, last week in the wake of his conviction on money laundering charges by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

With Okupe’s resignation, the Obi-Datti Campaign Organisation named Osuntokun last Tuesday as replacement.

Osuntokun had served variously as Political Adviser to President Olusegun Obasanjo, Director of presidential campaign of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2011, Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, among others.

However, in a statement today, the LP National Publicity Secretary expressed his strong opposition to Osuntokun’s appointment.

Arabambi alleged that Osuntokun has a subsisting membership of another political party, Zenith Labour Party (ZLP).

He further alleged that Osuntokun had concluded plans to run for senator in one of the South-West states on the platform of ZLP.

The letter said: “In my capacity as the National Publicity Secretary of Labour Party, I am opposing the announcement of Prof Akin Osuntokun as the DG Labour Party Campaign Organisation because at present, he is the Senatorial candidate of Zenith Labour Party, ZLP, Ekiti State and in the February 25, 2023, National Assembly election. The National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, by this treacherous act has compromised the victory of Labour Party and this political rascality will not stand.’’

Giving Osuntokun five days to resign immediately or face a revealing court action, Arabambi stated: “I am therefore calling on Prof Akin Osuntokun to resign as the DG Labour Party campaign organisation with immediate effect or face court action within the next five days.”
