Situation Room’s convener dies after surgery in Abuja’s hospital

Rights activist and convener of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room (Situation Room), Barr. Esther Uzoma is dead.

The Situation Room is made up of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) working in support of credible and transparent elections in Nigeria numbering more than seventy.

Uzoma, who was also the National Coordinator of Proactive Gender Initiative, reportedly died on Wednesday following surgery at a hospital in Abuja.

A statement issued by Situation Room on Thursday evening and jointly signed by the co-conveners, Asma’u Joda and Celestine Odo, said the death of the media-friendly Uzoma has created a big vacuum in the nation’s civil society organizations, especially in the area of deepening democratic governance and gender rights.

The statement read: “The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room (Situation Room), announces with deep shock the demise of its Convener who is also National Coordinator of Proactive Gender Initiative, Barr. Esther Uzoma.

“Esther Uzoma died on Wednesday, 6th January 2021 following surgery at a hospital in Abuja.

“Esther was very energetic and committed human rights and gender activist and has been at the forefront of driving Nigeria’s democratic reforms.

“She will be sorely missed by all who came in contact with her.

The family will make further announcements on burial arrangements.”

News report, however, gathered that Uzoma’s remains will leave for the East from Garki Hospital by 6:00 am on Friday.
