Nasarawa Assembly Demands Justice Over Killing Of State APC Chairman

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has called on government and security agents to unravel the killers of Mr. Philip Shekwo, the State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Speaker of the House, Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, made the call during the House proceedings in Lafia on Monday.

Balarabe-Abdullahi made the demand after Alhaji Tanko Tunga, the Majority Leader of the House moved a motion under the Matters of Public Interest on the death of Shekwo.

He said that unraveling and punishing the perpetrators of the evil act would serve as a deterrent to others and ensure sustainable peace in the state.
“The resolution of this House is to the effect that, Members advised His Excellency, Gov. Abdullahi Sule, to direct the security agents, to work hard to unravel the perpetrators of this act, to face justice.

“Security agents are to intensify efforts to protect the lives and property of the citizens.
“Government should provide adequate support to the security agents, to effectively protect lives and property,” he said.

According to him, the late chairman was a man of peace and an easy-going man and this is one death, too many.

“We have lost a leader in the state and may his soul rest in perfect peace,” the Speaker said.
The Speaker directed the Clerk of the House to produce a clean copy of the House resolution to the governor, for his necessary action.

Earlier, Hon. Tanko Tunga, the Majority Leader of the House, while moving a motion under the Matters of Public Interest said that it was inhuman and ungodly for someone to take another’s life.

“It is ungodly to take the life of another person. Security operatives are around, while the governments are doing their best in protecting lives and property.
“And, it is not that governments are not doing anything but this is the sign of the end times. I am calling on the perpetrators of the dastardly act to repent and change for the better,” he said.

The Minority Leader of the House, Mr. Danladi Jatau, supported the Majority Leader’s motion and urged governments to put more effort, to protect lives and property.

“It was unfortunate that we received the sad news of the death of the APC Chairman, with a rude shock.
“Governments are doing their best in the area of security, but a lot needs to be done towards protecting the lives and property of the people across the state,” he said.

Others who contributed to the motion were Mohammed Okpoku, David Maiyaki, and Labaran Shafa, just as they supported the submissions earlier made.

They called on the Federal Government to give more support to the National Orientation Agency, to do more in sensitizing people on morality, to guide the younger generation against negative acts.
The House unanimously passed a resolution advising the state government to direct the security agents to put more effort in addressing the security challenges facing the state.

Shortly after the sitting, the Speaker led other Members to pay a condolence visit to the deceased family, where they were received by the state APC Deputy Chairman, Aliyu Barde, and the deceased’s widow, Larai Shekwo.

The News reports recall that the Nasarawa State Chairman of APC, Mr. Philip Shekwo, was on Nov. 21 reportedly abducted from his residence in Lafia, the state capital and later found dead the following day.
