A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, In Nasarawa State, Iliya Aliyu, has cautioned the state House of Assembly to desist from resolutions that will set the electorates against the state government.
Mr. Aliyu gave the warning in an interview with the News reporters while reacting to the assembly’s recent call on the state electoral umpire to fast track preparations for the conduct of local government elections.
Recall that the Assembly had passed a resolution, urging the Nasarawa State Independent Electoral Commission, NASIEC, to commence preparation for the conduct of local government elections as the tenure of the present executive expires May 2021.
According to him, the Assembly’s call was uncalled for, saying that the resolution was capable of portraying the state government in a bad light.
Mr. Aliyu, who contested for the House of Representatives election 2019, said the state government was making efforts towards meeting the yearnings and aspirations of the citizens.
He, therefore, cautioned the Assembly against making policies that would be seen to be
strangulating the effort of the APC government in the state.
“The Assembly should have waited until the period of the present elected local government officials expires and elections are not conducted before making observation and laws to that effect,” he added.
Mr. Aliyu explained that the constitution has stipulated the functions of every arm of government and made it very explicit for the understanding of everybody, saying: “Every arm of government is expected to function within its scope to avoid unnecessary anxiety.”
“Conducting election is an exclusive right and reserve of the executive so it’s premature for the assembly to make such resolutions,” Mr. Aliyu added.
