AGF Absent as National Assembly, INEC Create Electoral Act Panel

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, on Tuesday, failed to attend the technical session on the amendment to the Electoral Act.

The event was jointly organized by the National Assembly Committee on the Independent National Electoral Commission and the management of INEC.

The Panel had last week held a public hearing on the amendment to the Electoral Act.

The lawmakers started the process of the amendment on Tuesday by holding a technical session with the INEC chairman, Prof. Yakubu Mahmood in attendance.

Neither Malami nor his representatives were on the seat when the Chairman of the Senate  Committee on INEC, Senator Kabiru Gaya, and other members of the Committee introduced themselves.

Gaya, however, said, “I wonder why the AGF is not here. He did not send a representative either. I am not aware that he sent a communication to the Secretariat.

“The Clerk should find out what actually happened because his attendance is crucial to this meeting.”

Speaking during the meeting, the INEC boss said there was a need to create additional polling units in the country.

He said, “We need to create an additional polling unit, this is part of our discussion at the meeting of the commission today (Tuesday).

“We need to expand access of voters to pooling units. The last time pooling units were created was in 1996.”

Gaya said that the joint Committee received a total number of 35 submissions and several other presentations. including the presentation of Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila.
