As the race for the presidency gathers steam across Nigeria, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Bayo Onanuga has come to insist that no other candidate stands a chance of clinching votes from the Southwest more than the party’s presidential flag bearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Speaking during an interview on CHANNELS TV’s ‘Politics Today’, Onanuga, who is the Director of Media and Publicity in the APC Campaign Council, dismissed the results of the NOI Polls that claimed Labour Party candidate from the Southeast, Peter Obi, almost garnered the same amount of support from potential voters in the Southwest with the former Lagos governor.
Going further, Onanuga pointed out that apart from the fact that the Yorubas have always had a history of supporting their candidates in national elections, there is nothing wrong if Tinubu gets the backing of his people, especially when Obi is enjoying the support of the Igbos.
“There is no wind of change in the way the Southwest people will vote in 2023. Historically, the Southwest people will back their own, everybody knows that. If the NOI Poll can say the Southeast people are going to back Peter Obi, then why is not good for the Southwest to back their own candidate?
But besides that, it’s not just about backing our candidate, the Southwest will support him because he is a good candidate, the best on the field,” he said.
