The Nigerian Academy of Letters (NAL) has elected Prof. Sunday Enessi Ododo, FNAL, as its new Vice President, following a keenly contested election held earlier today. Prof. Ododo, expressed deep gratitude to fellows and members for entrusting him with the role. In his
acceptance message, he pledged loyalty, effective service, and commitment to advancing the Academy’s mission. “It is a privilege to serve alongside such a talented and dedicated group of individuals, with the incoming President, Prof. Andrew Haruna,” Ododo stated, acknowledging the legacies of past NAL presidents from Emeritus Prof. Ayo Bamgbose to the outgoing president, Prof. Sola Akinrinade. “Working with the vision of the new President and the Executive Committee, we shall build on and embolden the enduring legacies of NAL for greater gains.” Prof. Ododo also extended appreciation to his opponent, Prof. Ekanola, for his sportsmanship, describing his graciousness in defeat as “a testament to the spirit of
camaraderie that defines us.”

For the Treasurer position, Prof. Arinpe Gbekelolu Adejumo, FNAL, emerged winner. In a goodwill message, Prof. Ekanola congratulated both
Ododo and Adejumo, wishing them a successful tenure and expressing hope for greater heights for NAL under the new leadership. The election also marks the transition of Prof. Andrew Haruna, Secretary General of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities (CVCNU) and outgoing NAL Vice President, into the role of NAL President. The 2025 NAL election not only produced credible results but also showcased the Academy’s culture of dignity, respect, and unity. As the Foundation President, Emeritus Professor Ayo Bamgbose aptly observed, the process was marked by gracious concession, statesmanlike acceptance, and a complete absence of rancour, qualities that stand as a model for electoral conduct in Nigeria.
With a vigilant Electoral Committee ensuring a smooth process, the NAL once again affirmed its reputation for excellence. Congratulations to the Academy on yet another milestone, and here’s to even greater successes ahead.
