Subsidy: Two-time ex-Kogi Commissioner, Ohikere, backs Tinubu

By Felix Durumbah

Strong support has come for presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who promised to remove fuel subsidy when he is sworn-in as the country’s president in 2023, as Dr. Tom Ohikere, Director-General (DG), frontline presidential support group, Nasser Ahmed for Tinubu and Shettima, has fully backed him on the plan.

Dr. Ohikere, who is also Managing Director (MD), APC NewsOnline, a wave-making news platform featuring both e-newspaper and online TV, thumbed up Tinubu, declaring that the APC flag bearer, unlike past leaders, has strong political will to do so.

Last Thursday at a business luncheon with entrepreneurs, tagged ‘Business Forward’ in Lagos, Tinubu said he will yank off fuel subsidy, stressing that no number of protests by workers will stop him.

The business guru and former governor of Lagos state defended his plan, insisting that Nigerians should not continue to subsidize fuel consumed by neighboring countries such as Cameroon, Niger and Benin Republic.

Since then, there have been conflicting reactions to the statement, some angry, saying the plan will further grind ordinary Nigerians in the dust of poverty.

However, dismissing the latter position, Dr. Ohikere, a two-time Commissioner of Information in Kogi state, told APC NewsOnline exclusively today that Tinubu is on the right track.

According to him, fuel subsidy in Nigeria under the defeated Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Federal Governments had failed woefully and became a conduit pipe to siphon public funds.

Dr. Ohikere said: ‘’ I support Tinubu on this. Fuel subsidy in Nigeria is a gross failure and the biggest scam.

‘’The scam in PDP era was the worst while their administration enjoyed sustainable crude oil pricing.’’

The well-traveled political strategist acknowledged that in other countries, fuel subsidy was a properly functioning mechanism to stabilize fuel price in the public interest, admitting, however, that in Nigeria the direct opposite was the case with prices on a seemingly eternal upward journey.

‘’ Countries subsidize in order to keep the prices of fuel from ballooning, but in the case of Nigeria, the reverse is the case as prices continue to skyrocket,’’ he noted.

He praised President Muhammadu Buhari who, he said, moved against subsidy, noting, however, that he was frustrated by ‘’anti-system elements.’’

Insisting that only Tinubu, among the presidential candidates, has the needed guts to take stern action against the subsidy malady, Dr. Ohikere rallied support for the APC presidential candidate to end the scam and save Nigerians loads of difficulties arising from fuel subsidy.
