On Smart Adeyemi and Abaribe: People with faults should not criticize others – APC NewsOnline

It would be a disservice to all that APC NewsOnline holds dear, to be quiet in the face of the bickering going in between two distinguished Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, viz: Senators Enyinnaya Abaribe of Abia State and Senator Smart Adeyemi from Kogi West.

The issue has now spiralled into a conflict that threatens to encompass the two governments of the states of Abia and Kogi.

The Senate is one of the two hallowed chambers in the Nigerian Parliament and hence is highly respected. It is expected that daily, legislative solutions be found to the myriads of problems confronting the nation on all fronts, be it infrastructure, finance, or security. And this was what was being done on the 23rd of February, 2021 during the Safe School Initiative before things descended to the absurd in the red Chambers.

Senator Eyinaya Abaribe, in a recorded video, was seen throwing barbs at the person of the Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency, Yahaya Bello, criticising his person, ability and capability, as well as his presidential ambition which is guaranteed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

In the video, which was undeniably recorded in the Red Chamber, he said: ‘Mr. President, people have been going around saying we need youths.

“The man in Kogi is Youth. Why is it that this man does not know what he’s doing? And there is so much insecurity in this particular place.

” And this does not give credence to those saying we should give the country to youths.

“Suppose we give it over to him (Gov. Bello) what would happen? We will now have a broken country? And a country thrown to the dogs?”

Though the Senator has denied it, every politics is local, everyone knows that and a sudden, unwarranted and unnecessary attack on anyone’s governor, would bring out the patriotic fervour in such a person, this should naturally prompt response from all senators from Kogi and not only Smart Adeyemi.

Irrespective of the time span, given the type of politics being played in Nigeria, unless there is an irreconcilable difference between the governor and legislator, no National Assembly member will watch his/her governor being whimsically flagellated and pretend to be deaf and dumb, except the member is profoundly disloyal.

In this light, Senator Smart Adeyemi may be pardoned for his reaction in defence of his governor, except that he perhaps overreached himself.

Similarly, those stoutly defending the Abia Governor have their salaries and positions to protect. Hence, going forward, we can only ask that this issue be resolved with love, maturity and understanding.

Thankfully, the Abia State Chief Press Secretary in his response to the issue has noted that they have nothing against the governor of Kogi State. This is maturity and a good beginning as we expect understanding and calm on both sides of the divide.
