The Labour Party Caucus in the House of Representatives has strongly condemned the recent threats made against Mr. Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate, by Senator Monday Okpebholo, the Governor of Edo State.
In a statement issued in Awka by its leader, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, the caucus described Okpebholo’s comments as outrageous, shocking, uncouth, and disappointing. The lawmakers criticized the governor’s remarks, labeling them “uncivil, unconstitutional, undemocratic, and unbecoming of a public official.”
The caucus emphasized that Mr. Obi’s philanthropic activities across Nigeria reflect his compassion and commitment to the welfare of the people, transcending politics, ethnicity, and other divides. Instead of facing vilification, they stated, Obi deserves commendation for his contributions to human capital development.
“As a symbol of democracy, nation-building, and sustainable development, Peter Obi deserves protection and support from everyone who upholds these values,” the statement read.
The lawmakers questioned the kind of example leaders set for the younger generation regarding civility, human rights, and respect for the rule of law when they openly promote intolerance and anti-democratic behavior, as seen in Okpebholo’s comments.
“Politics should not be a matter of life and death, and no one should be targeted for their political beliefs or associations. A democracy should never encourage the politics of bitterness, pettiness, or violence, especially from those who claim to be democrats,” they added.
The caucus expressed concern over the governor’s inflammatory comments, questioning what rhetoric he might be using behind closed doors against perceived political opponents. They highlighted that Okpebholo’s statements were made during a defection event for Hon. Marcus Onobun, whom the governor had previously threatened with the demolition of his property over alleged security concerns.
“It would be worth asking the governor whether he still plans to demolish Hon. Onobun’s residence, now that he has coerced him into his political camp,” the caucus stated, adding that it is unfortunate for a governor to publicly boast about insecurity in his state and make unsubstantiated claims about citizens’ deaths.
The Labour Party lawmakers called on President Bola Tinubu to caution Governor Okpebholo and warned that any harm to Peter Obi, anywhere in Nigeria or abroad, would not be tolerated.
“Just recently, it was the Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia; now it is Okpebholo of Edo. If the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) believes it can use threats to undermine the growing popularity of Peter Obi, it should reconsider,” the caucus concluded.
The statement came in response to remarks made by Okpebholo over the weekend in Edo State, where he declared that Peter Obi’s safety in the state could not be guaranteed if he entered without seeking his permission.
