Labour Party on Friday ratified the Senator Esther Nenadi-led Interima National Working Committee at a well attended National Executive Committee meeting held on Friday at the NICON Hilton, Abuja.

The ratification was on the heels of the Supreme Judgment that sacked Barrister Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the party.

In a communique released to CAPITAL POST after the NEC meeting, the party approved that the scheduled congresses should hold to enable new officers emerge in line with the party’s constitution, which would also reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general election.

Part of the communique read: “The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party met in Abuja on Friday, 18th July 2025, at Transcorp Hilton Hotel.

“The meeting was duly convened by Statutory NEC members, in line with the Labour Party Constitution and pursuant to the decisions of the Supreme Court of Nigeria delivered on 4th April 2025, between Sen. Nenadi E. Usman (Labour Party National Caretaker Committee Chairman) v. Labour Party & Anor suit number SC/CV/56/2025 which confirmed that the tenure of Barr. Julius Abure has ended.

“The meeting was attended by Statutory members of the National Executive Council,the Board of Trustees (BoT), leaders of the Nigeria LaboUr Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC). At the end of deliberations, the following resolutions were unanimously adopted by the NEC and issued as the official communique.

“Ratification of the Interim National Working Committee (lNWC): “The NEC unanimously ratified and inaugurated the Interim National Working Committee (INWC) of the Labour Party under the leadership of Senator Nenadi E. Usman as the Interim National Chairman and Senator Darlington Nwokocha as the interim National Secretary among other persons.

“The NEC approved the detailed schedule for the conduct of Ward Congresses, Local Government Area Congresses, State Congresses, Zonal Congresses, and the National Convention of the Labour Party.

“The National Secretariat is mandated to publish the guidelines and timelines to ensure transparent and democratic elections at all levels.”Communiqué 18-7-25

Labour Party has also resolved to put crisis behind it and charged stakeholders to credibly embark on membership drive as to invigorate the party ahead of elections.

The Labour Party NEC expressed commitment to internal democracy, while warning elements constituting parallel party structures to desist as they would not find it easy henceforth.

Speaking during party deliberations, the governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti stressed that, “it will be shameful for Labour Party to jettison the ideals of founding fathers by abandoning the party.

While commending one of the founding fathers and Labour leader, late Pascal Bafyau, he enjoined members of the party to strengthen the party as it represents the democratic values of Nigerians.

The governor also called for reconciliation with aggrieved party members including the sacked Julius Abure, urging the aggrieved to tender letter of apology to the Secretariat so that they can be brought back into the fold.
