A chieftain of people democratic party, PDP, Mr. James Babatunde Macaulay has dismissed Monday’s visit to President Bola Tinubu by the National Leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP of capable of making any positive impacts on the fortunes of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC in Kano.
He flayed the President for misreading political trends in the north and Kano state.
Macaulay in the statement coming in the aftermath of the visit of the former Kano State governor to President Tinubu said Kwankwaso would be a burden not an asset if he defects to the APC.
Kwankwaso who had in the past been rumoured to be harbouring a vice presidential position in current Presidency visited President Tinubu on Monday.
Reacting to the buzz generated by the visit, Macaulay said the coalition ADC would be the major beneficiary of the defection of Kwankwaso to the APC.
According him, “As we speak today, the APC will not win anywhere in the North. Not even Kano where Senator Kwankwaso comes from for a number of reasons but unfortunately, the leadership of the APC is misreading political trends in Kano.
“President Tinubu and the APC thinks Kwankwaso has Kano in his bag but this isn’t true and far fetched. From all I can see, the victory of the NNPP in 2023 came as a result of the resentment of the people to the APC and not because of the popularity of Kwankwaso or the NNPP.”
Giving a further breakdown of likely scenario of event that would play out if the former minister of defense defects to the APC, Kwankwaso stated that most members of the APC in Kano would move en masse to the ADC thus giving the new coalition platform a foothold in Kano.
“There is no gainsaying the fact that many members of the APC in Kano will leave the party in droves because of Kwankwaso thus helping ADC secure foothold in Kano,” he said.
Dispelling the notion that Kwankwaso is the undisputed champion of Kano politics, he stated in most of the electoral contestation, the only area usually won by Kwankwassiyya leadership remains Kano metropolis.
“It must be noted that the political tendency of the former governor has never won outside the metropolis not to talk of winning in the Northern and Southern districts of the state.
“Should the APC leadership and the Presidency go ahead to recruit the former minister, the likes of Sen. Kawu Sumaila, Abdullahi Bapa Bichi, Hon. Ruru, and Gawuna would rise to political ascendancy in Kano,”the statement concluded.
