Doyin Okupe, the Director General (DG) of Obi-Datti presidential campaign, does not deserve to stay on the seat following his conviction on Monday by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.
This was the position of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign council today, Tuesday, 20 December, 2022.
Okupe, who calls the shots in the campaign council of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was sentenced to two-and-a half years in prison for breaching the Money Laundering Act.
However, the presiding judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, handed him an option of N500, 000 fine on each of the 26-count charges, totaling N13million for which he was found guilty with the former presidential aide to x-President Goodluck Jonathan reportedly opting to pay the
fine to beat the 4:30pm payment deadline.
Reacting to the court verdict, Director of Media and Publicity for Tinubu-Shettima Campaign Council, Bayo Onanuga, asked that Okupe be removed or resign, pointing out that he does not deserve to continue to sit in that office.
Speaking to a national daily, Onanuga said: “Okupe should resign from his post as DG of Obi’s Campaign. He should do so honorably. The court has spoken. He should no longer be involved in the campaign.”
He tweeted, “God is not man. The enemies have tried in so many ways but keep failing…Victory is of God.”
