A significant milestone was achieved for Nigeria’s industrial landscape with the commissioning of offices of The National Steel Council today 22nd July, 2025.
The steel Council, was established in September 18 1979, then reconstituted in 2022 by Late President Muhammed Buhari, since then there has been no operational Facilities and Staff until the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, through the Hon Minister of steel development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu who have succeeded in the recruitment of staff and reconstitution of a New Board.
This initiative is a critical step towards revitalizing the steel industry, which is often regarded as the bedrock of any nation’s economic development. The council has been vested with the responsibility of formulating comprehensive policies that will guide and strengthen the entire steel sector in Nigeria, ensuring that it contributes effectively to the country’s growth and development.
The ceremony was presided over by the Honourable Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu.
Out of over 2000 applicants, a thorough screening was carried out and about 200 qualified Nigerians were recruited who will form the backbone of the National Steel Council. This carefully recruited team is expected to bring diverse expertise and innovative ideas, ensuring that the council is well equipped to tackle the challenges facing the steel industry. Interestingly the recruitment has reduced the unemployment rate in Nigeria.

During the commissioning, the Honourable Minister emphasized the importance of a robust steel policy, which he enumerated as being essential for enhancing local production capacity, thereby reducing dependence on imports, and fostering economic growth. He reiterated his vision for a competitive and self sustaining steel industry that will not only cater for domestic needs but also position Nigeria as a major exporter of steel products.
The establishment of the National Steel Council marks a pivotal moment for Nigeria, signaling a renewed focus on developing critical infrastructure and industrial capacity. With the commitment shown by The Ministry of Steel Development and The National Steel Council, the positive expectations of Nigeria’s steel industry is visible.
As the National Steel Council embarks on its journey, all eyes will be on its performance and the impact it will have in shaping a prosperous future for Nigeria’s steel industry.
