Aregbesola meets Osun youths over insecurity, #EndSARS protests

Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, on Friday, arrived in Osun State to engage with youths in the state over the security challenges facing the country.

The minister’s meeting with the youths also aims at preventing a repeat of the violence that trailed the October #EndSARS protests.

Aregbesola disclosed that the visit was a Presidential directive to ministers to dialogue with their constituents over the protests.

According to a statement on Friday, by the interior ministry spokesman, Mohammed Manga, the minister also called on the people of the state to continue to support the efforts of the government to bring about socio-economic development in the country.

It said the minister spoke at the third session of the Synod and conferment of the Ecumenical and Episcopal award of the Ijesa North Diocese of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, on him by St Peter Anglican Church, Ijebu-Ijesa, Osun State.

Aregbesola noted that the development of the nation cannot be left in the hands of the government but that the people have to take responsibility for their development.

The statement read, “Aregbesola stated that he would be in Osun State for some days to carry out a Presidential directive to ministers to engage their constituents on security in the aftermath of the #EndSARS protests in parts of the country.

“He said further that he has brought with his greetings and message of love, appreciation, and affection from President Muhammadu Buhari to the Church, the prelate, congregation, and through them, the people of Osun and the generality of Nigerians.”

According to him, the President and the Federal Executive Council acknowledged the challenges facing the nation, adding that Buhari was “confident of our collective capacity to surmount these challenges.”

He called for continued dialogue and peaceful means of conflict resolution at all times and urged the youths to seek knowledge, dialogue, and debate as peaceful means of conflict resolution, interest articulation, and pursuit.

The diocesan Bishop of Ijesa North Anglican Communion and Synod President, Rt. Revd Isaac Oluyamo, urged the Federal Government to address insecurity and youth unemployment “so as to prevent a future repeat of the recent #EndSARS protests witnessed in some parts of the country.”
