10th NASS: Group insists on Yari’s Senate Presidency

Political support groups, namely the Tinubu Support Network and the Amalgamated APC Support Groups, have emphasized their backing for Senator Abdulaziz Yari as their preferred candidate for the position of President of the Senate. These groups argue that Yari possesses extensive executive and legislative experience, surpassing other Senators vying for the role.

During a press conference held in Kaduna, Engr Mohammed Kailani, the National Chairman of the Tinubu Support Network and the Director-General of the Amalgamated APC Support Groups, highlighted two key points. Firstly, Yari hails from the Northwest region and boasts a wealth of executive and legislative expertise. Secondly, the Northwest region contributed the highest percentage of votes, surpassing all other geopolitical zones, during the presidential election, with 30% of the total votes cast.

Kailani further stated that the North Central region secured the third position with 20%, followed by the North East with 13.5%. The South South claimed the fifth position with 9.10%, while the South East finished sixth with a mere 1.45%. In terms of electoral success, Yari’s Northwest region outperformed all others.

Despite recognizing the right of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to express their opinion in a democratic setting, the support groups stand firm in their belief that Yari is the most qualified contender. They acknowledge the ongoing protests and discontent expressed by various parties, including Southwest governors from Senator Bola Tinubu’s constituency and the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), who have voiced their concerns about the APC’s choice of Senate Presidency and Speakership. This widespread opposition suggests that the APC’s final decision may lack popular support.

The support groups highlight Yari’s long-standing membership in the APC, dating back to the time before the party’s merger that led to the formation of the APC itself. Yari’s involvement with the party stretches back to the era of the All People’s Party (APP), where he served as a party Secretary, effectively managing internal crises in Zamfara State during a period of intense political tensions. His efforts contributed to the party’s rejuvenation and strengthened its position. In contrast, the support groups question the commitment and contributions of Senators Akpabio and Orji Uzor-Kalu, raising doubts about their comparative loyalty and dedication to the party’s success.

The support groups dismiss the argument that first-time Senators would be relegated to the role of backbenchers, pointing to examples of outgoing Senators who defied this notion and achieved significant legislative milestones. They mention the case of a first-time Senator from Kaduna Central, who moved numerous motions and initiated over 30 bills in less than two years. Additionally, they highlight the example of Senator Tambuwal, currently a first-time Senator but previously a Speaker in the House of Representatives. Consequently, the support groups remain undeterred by the notion of experience differentials between first-timers and long-serving Senators.

In terms of religious affiliations, the groups prioritize constitutional provisions over sentiment. They assert that the Nigerian Constitution does not consider religious affinity as a determining factor for any elective or appointive office. Rather, it emphasizes geopolitical zones. The groups argue that Yari’s appointment as Senate President would foster a robust commitment to democratic and social justice, leading to a harmonious relationship between the legislative and executive branches due to his experience in both realms
